Ponta de Sao Lourenco is the far east extreme of Madeira Island
This is a very fascinating walk along the coast on wonderful rock formations sticking out into the Atlantic Ocean.
This is the very eastern end of Madeira, one of the last parts being formed by the volcanic eruptions on the island hundreds of years ago. Like a little desert on the seaside, following the path you enjoy the waves hitting the spectacular and dramatic coastline with harmony. the Atlantic is all around you as it is an extremely narrow peninsula with a few meters separating the north from the south coast. The path leads us to a little shed with some slopes up and downhill. Rails are protecting as we follow, a break at the casa do Sardinha house for a drink and picnic. Possible also to swim in the Atlantic. The walk back gives us once again the chance to appreciate the steep rocks, the colors they show are like a rainbow with the various rock formations and their different colors. Just amazing and very distinct from other walks as no forest is found, just the colors of natural wild rock structures with the blue Atlantic. about 7km medium easy walk
